TQ has switched on over-the-air (OTA) updates for its HPR60 and HPR40 motors. Instead of booking a workshop slot, owners can now pull new firmware for the drive unit, display, battery, range extender and Smartbox straight from the free TQ E-Bike app over Bluetooth. For eMTB riders that mainly means the TQ HPR60, the motor found in lightweight trail bikes such as the Trek Fuel+ EX, Yeti MTe, Propain Sresh SL and Rose File Plus.

How TQ OTA updates work

The OTA download function arrived with the TQ E-Bike app release of 18 September 2026. TQ says availability depends on the specific system and is being rolled out in stages. The app connects to the bike via Bluetooth and also lets riders adjust motor power, assistance levels and responsiveness, and check battery data and installed software versions.

The first OTA install is not entirely self-service: a dealer has to activate the function once using the TQ Dealer Service Tool and load the latest software. After that, riders can install future updates themselves through the app.

What the latest packages change

The HPR60 package from 24 September fixes motor output in the lowest assistance level that was too weak and improves the state-of-charge calculation when the battery is low. The HPR40 package from 18 September brings stability fixes for rare errors and more accurate low-battery and average-power figures.

Exceptions and the HPR50

Orbea and Rotwild bikes with the HPR40 system are excluded from the app-based OTA downloads, and several brands run special firmware versions – among them Rotwild's HPR60 bikes, the Orbea Rallon RS and Trek's HPR50 models. TQ directs Rallon RS owners to Orbea's own RS Connect platform.

Owners of HPR50 bikes such as the Mondraker Neat still need a dealer for updates. TQ says it is working on an HPR50 OTA update and will share release details later. For other brands' update practices, see our eMTB firmware updates overview.
