Error 503 is one of the most common faults on Bosch eBikes. It means the system has a problem with the speed sensor, the small sensor near the rear wheel that counts wheel revolutions with the help of a magnet. Without a valid speed signal, the motor can't work normally. Bosch's drive unit manual says that if the sensor isn't connected properly or the magnet sits too close or too far away, the speed display fails and the drive unit switches to an emergency mode.
The good news: in many cases you can fix error 503 yourself in a few minutes, because the cause is often a magnet that has moved or a sensor that was knocked during a wheel change. This guide covers both Bosch generations, the older Performance Line CX (Gen 4) with Purion, Intuvia, Kiox or Nyon displays and the current smart system, with the magnet clearances from Bosch's own manuals.
What Bosch error 503 means
In Bosch's error code table for the classic system, code 503 is listed as a speed sensor fault. Bosch's first advice is to restart the system and, if the error stays, to see a Bosch eBike dealer. A related code, 504, means the system has detected a distorted speed signal: Bosch asks you to check that the spoke magnet is positioned correctly and that nothing has been tampered with (tuning). With 504, assistance is reduced.
On the smart system, faults are shown as six-digit codes on the display, and the eBike Flow app shows the code together with a plain-language description. Our eMTB error codes guide lists more Bosch codes for both generations.
Which speed sensor does your bike have?
Bosch uses three set-ups, and the right magnet gap depends on which one you have:
- Standard speed sensor with spoke magnet (classic system): a sensor on the chainstay and a magnet clamped to a spoke.
- Speed sensor (slim): a slimmer sensor that reads either a magnet on the CenterLock brake rotor mount or a spoke magnet. Used on the classic Gen 4 drive units and the smart system.
