Whakarewarewa Forest β€” "the Redwoods" β€” on the edge of Rotorua has more than 180 km of mountain-bike trails, from Grade 2 scenic loops to advanced descents such as Eagle vs Shark. The trails are maintained by the Rotorua Trails Trust on privately owned forest land, where access is described as a privilege.

Getting in and up

The main entry is the Waipa car park, with the easiest trails, bike hire and a cafΓ©. The Te PΕ«take o Tawa hub, opened in 2020, gives access to higher trails near Lake Tikitapu. Public shuttles run to the high points, and private 4WD shuttle charters are available.
